Why is Times square called Times square (New York)

See that building in the middle of the picture. The one with all the billboards and flashy signs on it?
If you go to Times Square, you will see it is pretty much abandoned, even though it seems to be a really sturdy structure and not just a scaffolding.
That building is where the New York Times used to be published. When they opened the building, the intersection around 7th Avenue, 42nd Street and Broadway became “Times Square”, much like the intersection around 6th, 33rd and Broadway was “Herald Square” after the New York Herald.
The Times soon outgrew the building, but it turned out to be a perfect spot for advertising displays so it’s still maintained. The new headquarters of the Times is in the immediate neighbourhood in a much larger building
